Corporate Event Venue Review of Hilton Branson

If you are looking for corporate event venue ideas, the Hilton Convention Center in Branson, Missouri is an excellent choice. The hotel staff and convention services were both top notch. From management to the staff, everyone went out of their way to make sure that everything was suitable for the client and their event.

As a corporate entertainer, I get to see things clients do not. I’m generally setting and sound checking while the room is being set. With no clients around, you will sometimes hear disgruntled or unhappy employees complaining about something. Not at the Hilton Convention Center. That speaks very highly for their dedication to making convention clients happy.

The convention center is conveniently attached to the hotel via the second floor walkway. There is a bar/lounge on the corner where attendees could meet and talk over a drink following seminars.

A grand escalator led down to the convention center lobby and ballrooms. I’m not certain when this venue was built or renovated but everything was in top shape and absolutely gorgeous. The ballroom is available in several configurations. The corporate event I entertained was sectioned into Taneycomo B, which held about 250 people with room to spare.

Convention-Venue1The ballroom lighting is state of the art, with programmable LED lighting to set the mood. It looks great, but beware of your choices. The client had decided upon an orange light for their casino night. The lights made their entire buffet look like Salmon. No one could determine what the food was before taking a bite. On the evening of my performance, they selected a blue to set a subdued tone. It definitely added to the ambience.

In my rider, I require sound for the stage. The Hilton Convention Center features Bose speakers in the ceiling. At some point, my rider was ignored and a decision was made to use the “house system”. Ordinarily, Bose would be a suitable system, but not when ceiling mounted. Their ceiling mounted system is excellent for short announcements during a trade show or banquet. Not for entertainment.

The system has multiple inputs that all operate on one channel. Basically, that means that everything plugged into their inputs will operate at the same level. My music input is designed for line, not mic inputs. They had no way of increasing the volume, which effectively removed my musical accompaniment from the program.

The system was also not designed with convenience in mind. The level controls were in another room. It took two staff members to set the level, talking to each other by cell phone. I am not sure what happened between sound check and show time, but the volume changed. (Possibly a result of the ceiling speakers all being connected, but only one room in use.) At show time, the client informed me they had to increase the volume and he wasn’t sure if my level would be correct when I went on-stage.

As a result of this, I take no pride in saying the show suffered. For the expense of renting a top-notch venue it made no sense to me. Trying to save money on the correct audio to make the corporate entertainment successful, cost this client.

The AV staff at the Branson Hilton Convention Center did their best to make the situation work. They too were top notch. Unfortunately there was little they could do with a system that wasn’t designed for the purpose of show entertainment.

convention-venue2I would like to pass along one last thought to event planners considering this venue. Make certain you are aware of any other events that will be taking place around yours. The night of my performance, there was an event happening in the other section of the ballroom. That client had brought in a musical group from one of the Branson theaters. During their sound check, they deafened the room. The “air wall” that separates the ballroom is definitely not sound proof. Luckily, my program was scheduled to end before their entertainment started. Staff told me of several instances where unhappy clients had their meetings drowned out by something happening on the other side of the wall.

Over all, I would have to give the Hilton Convention Center an A+ . It you are looking for a venue that is gorgeous, works hard to make you happy and is conviently located, give them a call. You will be glad you did.

5 Powerful Ways To Use Corporate Entertainers

5 Powerful Ways To Use Corporate Entertainers

Hiring a corporate entertainer is always a great way to liven up an event, but what if you could use them more to your advantage? Tom Crowl has come up with 5 powerful ways to use corporate entertainers that will make your event turn out even better than you had planned!

  1. If you play ambience music during cocktail hours it adds an extra dimension and can make people feel more relaxed. If everyone is at ease conversations flow easier making people more comfortable in the social environment.
  2. If you use a Caricature Artists it creates customer appreciation and you could even use the pictures for gifts to give to your major clients! It is also a great way to create laughter, which improves everyone’s mood!
  3. You could hire imposters to convince the audience that they are normal businessmen. Your guests will squirm at the things they say before they realize who they are and that the joke is on them! This is a great way to relax your guests and make them giggle.
  4. By having Juggling workshops as a team building break-out session during seminars, it can help people escape from the task at hand and then when they return, you will find that they have fresh ideas and an open mind. Breaking up the session with something fun will improve the audience response by making them more energized.
  5. How about hiring a Magician for your new product launch. They could make your new item appear out of a hat or even disappear into thin air. A business comedian could be great for a product launch to as they could discuss the cool new features and make jokes about how they compare with the competition. This will certainly make your new item more memorable!

If you would like some more information about the powerful ways to use corporate entertainers, or the types of entertainers you could use for your event, contact Tom here or call (410)596-4127 and he will be happy to help.

5 Myths About Ventriloquists

5 Myths About Ventriloquists

Ventriloquists have been a popular form of entertainment for ages. Even with the success of ventriloquists like Jeff Dunham, people still have misconceptions about the art. It is time to debunk these myths in our own version of Ventriloquist Myth-Busters!

Myth Number 1:
Ventriloquists are born with a special ability.

This is definitely not true. Early practioneers of the art tried to hide their methods using deception. Ventriloquists, like magicians, didn’t want people to learn their secrets. They created and spread the myth that ventriloquists were born with special abilities. Some people still believe that a ventriloquist has double throats or a second set of vocal chords.

The truth is, anyone can perform ventriloquism. To be a ventriloquist you simply need proper training and practice. There are books and even on-line ventriloquism lessons. People of all ages have learned and practiced the art.

Myth Number 2:
Ventriloquists talk with their mouths closed.

Ventriloquists use a resonant voice, like a hum. The resonant voice needs two air passages for the sound to escape. The upper breathe stream escapes through the nasal cavity. The lower breathe stream escapes through a small opening between the lips of the ventriloquist. This makes a louder sound so the puppet can be heard.

If the ventriloquist had his or her lips closed, the air would not escape and the puppet voice would be muffled. So this myth is also busted.

Myth Number 3:
Ventriloquists clench their teeth together.

This is another falsehood that spread. Usually by people who never learned to perform ventriloquism. If the teeth are clenched together, the lower breathe stream mentioned above could not escape. This would muffle the puppet’s voice. A skilled ventriloquist separates their teeth slightly and learns to talk without the use of their lips. There is no short cut for this technique. It requires practice.

Myth Number 4:
Ventriloquists believe their dummy is real.

The movie and television industry have created this popular myth. Movies wouldn’t be half as scary if a ventriloquist placed his figure in a case and put it away.

There is a thread of truth behind this myth. When the ventriloquist figure or puppet is on-stage, the ventriloquist treats the puppet as if it were real. By acting this way, the audience will suspend their belief and “buy into” the illusion of life. We realize that the puppet is just a tool. It is the instrument that a ventriloquist “plays” to present their performance.

Myth Number 5:
Ventriloquists are weird.

The picture of a lonely person talking to dolls seems to be a popular image to people who have never experienced the magic of the art. The truth is, ventriloquism is a skill that takes practice, persistence and talent to present. People who take the art seriously and develop their skills are true artists.

Like any art or profession, there may be a few strange people, but most are down to earth and friendly. Ventriloquists even have an international convention where the pros teach amateur and semi-professionals.

If you are looking for a ventriloquist to entertain your audience, contact Tom Crowl now. Tom is a founding member of the International Ventriloquist Society. He is also the creator of the Learn-Ventriloquism Course. As a staff member of the Vent Haven ConVENTion, Tom is a respected leader in the industry. Do People Hate Ventriloquists?

Do People Hate Ventriloquists?

Do you hate ventriloquists? A lot of people do. Some people can’t stand comedians with puppets, even if others find them super fun to watch. It may seem surprising, but there are many things about ventriloquists that make people avoid them.

Read on to find out why!

Why Some People Hate Ventriloquists:

There are a variety of reasons why people do not regard ventriloquism as an enjoyable form of entertainment. But most of these reasons are a result of misconceptions and faulty ideas, and preferences.

Many people were first exposed to ventriloquists in movies and television shows. Most of the times, these depictions are far from the truth. The ventriloquist who believes their dummy is real is the work of movie fiction. Ventriloquist figures do not take on a life of their own either. These portrayals of ventriloquists have resulted in a dislike of the art.

Another reason for the dislike of the art form is the use of life like puppets and ventriloquist figures. Some people find these figures creepy. Others experience the disquieting symptoms of Automatonophobia. That is the fear of anything which resembles a real life form.

Some people hate ventriloquists because they feel that their acts are not entertaining. Or even worse, boring. That may be caused due to experiences with unskilled performers who have not mastered the technique of the unique art form. There is nothing sadder than watching a bad ventriloquist.

Corny and outdated jokes by ventriloquists are another reason why people avoid ventriloquist performances. Old scripts performed by amateurs has established this stereotype in the minds of many. Others have seen ventriloquist comedians that are abusive or use foul language. These impressions make it difficult for them to keep an open mind. Just as all singers are not the same, neither are all ventriloquists!

Changing Dynamics And Growing Fondness For The Art Of Ventriloquism

Over the years, this art form of comedy puppet skits has evolved. Today it has become one of the most unique and increasingly preferred styles of entertainment.

One reason for this change in popularity is a renewed love of puppetry. The Muppet show took puppetry to new heights. Puppets became cool again, and that trend made the art of ventriloquism more interesting.

Professional ventriloquists began to focus on characters that held a wider appeal with audiences. Some of the best examples are Jeff Dunham’s Bubba J, Peanut and Achmed. These puppets have warmth and a greater depth to them, which makes their performance fun and entertaining. Dunham’s world-wide success proves this.

Ventriloquism is now taught with updated methods. This allows students to hone their skills to ensure quality entertainment. Interactive and virtual teaching has helped budding ventriloquists develop a solid foundation. This has served to make their live performances better and more entertaining.

Added exposure to quality performances are available both on television and the Internet. This increased visibility also makes the art more popular with live entertainment audiences. Professional ventriloquists are easily holding their own in the industry. They often generate more laughs per minute when compared to other forms of comic entertainments.

To counter the fear of automatonophobia, many of today’s ventriloquists opt for a soft puppets. This makes the act less scary and thus agreeable to a wider variety of audiences.

Another reason for the growing appeal of this unique art of entertainment are memories. Many of today’s audiences have grown up with Shari Lewis and Lambchop. Others may remember the NESTLES jingle, even if they don’t remember a ventriloquist made the song famous.

The change in the current form of the art has changed many perceptions of ventriloquists.

If you’d like to change perceptions and try something truly different, contact Tom Crowl today. Tom’s comedy ventriloquist show will highlight your event and keep everyone laughing.

The Pros and Cons of Corporate Comedy Revealed

The Pros and Cons of Corporate Comedy Revealed

What are the pros and cons of corporate Comedy? Is a good idea to hold a corporate event featuring comedy for your employees? We’d like to share the positives and negatives associated with corporate comedy. Hopefully this will help you decide if it will be right for your company, your event and your guests.

Lets Start With The Pros …

The biggest advantage of corporate comedy is that it is great for your health. “Laughter is the best medicine.” Comedy makes people feel less stressed and more relaxed. Corporate comedy events offer a day away from the office. This relaxation can increase quality of work and productivity. When employees return, they will approach scenarios with a fresh mind and positive attitude.

Another Pro of a corporate comedy event is that your employees will be able to socialise with colleagues outside of the work environment. Approached as a team building experience, a corporate comedy can break down walls. This will improve relationships within the office making a more effective workforce.

Now Onto The Cons …

Corporate comedy can be costly if you don’t watch for hidden expenses. More than a business comedians’ fee,  travel, meals and lodging may be required. Be sure to check all contract and production riders too. An unexpected technical expense for the program can blow a budget.

Beware of comedians who aren’t corporate savvy. Your entertainment must understand they are there to represent the company and not just perform their act. The comedian must relate to your audience and event. If they don’t, the performance can easily kill your evening.

Comedy must be presented in the correct atmosphere. At times, the business comedians’ needs may conflict with your event flow. If the staging and seating are not set to create a positive comedy atmosphere, the program can be ruined before it starts. This is the last thing you want! Be sure to discuss the needs of your corporate entertainment with your staff and venue manager. If suitable arrangements can not be made, you may have to make changes or seek another form of entertainment.

How To Avoid Things Going Wrong

  • Make sure you get an all-inclusive quote or at least request estimates and limits for travel expenses. To save money on travel or lodging, book it through your company as sometimes you may receive a corporate discount.
  • It is important to request a complete contract rider; this is to ensure that there are no surprise expenses before signing a contract.
  • Talk to the comedian at length to determine they understand your event and needs. If they don’t, there will always be someone that does. Also, have a look at the comedians’ videos. If they make you laugh, they should make your guests laugh.
  • Lastly, make sure you request information on how the room and seating should be arranged as this will help create a positive performance experience for the audience.

Boring Corporate Events – 5 Proven Remedies To Engage Guests

Boring Corporate Events – 5 Proven Remedies To Engage Guests

The success of your corporate event hinges on what happens next. All the plates are cleared from the tables and the lights shine onto the stage. The room falls silent. You have hired a corporate entertainer to present the after dinner entertainment. Will the audience like them? Will they deliver as promised? and most importantly, will the boss approve?…

Are you looking to hire an entertainer for a corporate event but don’t know where to start? There are thousands of different types of corporate entertainment companies out there all with different niches, but who should you choose?

Wouldn’t it be great if there was someone out there who could give you tips that could help you deal with the pressures of providing corporate party entertainment – Well lucky for you, that is where we come in.

Tom Crowl has been in the entertainment business for around 30 years. He has put together 5 remedies to help you determine which corporate entertainment company will be best for entertaining your crowd…

Tip One: You must encourage all speakers to plan their speeches, a time limit needs to be followed. Even if it means that they wear a stopwatch, you have to keep track of time. A speaker who wings it or is unprepared tends to go over and you will most likely find that the audience will start falling to sleep. Short and Sweet will save the day!

Tip Two: All entertainers must stay on schedule, nothing irritates people more than an event that overruns. Vendors should be made aware that timing is crucial! Most events never run to schedule and they end up with a fidgeting audience. Don’t ever be afraid to tighten or shorten something to get back on track. Your guests will be pleased and will thank you.

Tip Three: Whatever you do, don’t end with entertainment. After 30 years in this business, I can assure you that events that end with entertainment slowly fizzle because people are conscious of the time. When the rest of the event is over, and entertainment is all that’s left, the babysitter or the morning commute come to mind. The audience begins to drift off, no matter who you have chose to entertain the crowd. Putting your entertainment prior to the speeches and door prizes puts everyone in a great mood and the rest of the evening will sail along smoothly.

Tip Four: Hold door prizes or desert for last. Why? You want to keep the crowd and we all know that everyone loves desert! This will make sure your group stays until the end so your event message can be summed up successfully.

Tip Five: Last but not least, you shouldn’t rely on the same entertainment every year – no matter how well it was received. Bringing the same act back year after year creates a monotony and your attendance will eventually suffer. Keep things fresh. If you liked last year’s entertainment, talk to them for referrals. Consider bringing popular acts back on a three year cycle.

We are sure that if you apply these tips when choosing your next Corporate Entertainment Company, you will most certainly have returning guests each year and a huge round of applause at the end of each event that you hold!

Effective Strategies For Planning A Corporate Christmas Party

Effective Strategies For Planning A Corporate Christmas Party

Many hands make light work. Keep this proverb in mind if you’ve been tasked with planning a corporate Christmas party. You can’t do it by yourself.

Plan The Party:

Form a party planning committee. Work with your employer to come up with a plan to encourage people to join the committee. Can the committee meet on company time, and can refreshments be served during the meeting?

Be Proactive: You’ll want to include people from all departments, if possible, to get a mix of expectations and tastes, as well as keeping petty grievances to a minimum.

Budget:

Plan the venue, food, and entertainment first since this is where you’ll be spending most of your budget. Your plans for all three need to work well together. Does the venue have the sound system and stage your entertainer needs? Will there be a raucous wedding, with a rock band, in the next room that will drown out the magician that you’ve hired? Does the meal need to be complete before the entertainment starts because the entertainer will be interacting with the audience?

Be Proactive: Visit the venue and look at the layout as well as the area that your company will be using. In addition, consider if it will be easy for employees to get to the location.

Don’t assume the restaurant can meet your expectations. Discuss your party ideas with the manager. If you want the meal to be concluded in one hour, the manager can tell you if that is possible.

It’s A Party:

Yes, the company is having a party, and everyone will be in a festive holiday mood and ready to have fun. But with any company event, it’s a good idea to have activities that build camaraderie. You can create team spirit with a mix of Christmas games.

Be Proactive: The entertainment can include some fun team building activities. Consider hiring an entertainer with an interactive show, one in which employees are included.

Decorations:

Decide if Christmas decorations will be used. Employees may be willing to make decorations or donate decorations they no longer use. Remember that decorating can be as simple as creating a fun party atmosphere by adding uplights to cast mood lighting on the walls.

Be Proactive: You don’t want to be stuck with a truckload of decorations after the party. Put a “you win” sign under one chair at each table. That person wins the table centerpiece. Find a home for other decorations, perhaps donating them to a charity after the party.

Gifts:

No one wants another company mug. Give employees a small gift such as a flash drive. It’s gender neutral, practical, and something that most people will use.

Be Proactive: Anticipate the type of gift that makes employees roll their eyes. If the item will have a company logo on it, make it small. Or instead of a logo, give an item that represents the company. If your company manufactures guitars, give everyone a guitar-shaped flash drive.

Prizes:

You’ll need prizes for games, and you may want to award them for other activities. As with the gifts, employees don’t want cheap items with a huge company logo on them. Give something of value that employees will be happy to receive.

Be Proactive: You need to decide how to best spend the money you’ve been given. Would employees rather have chicken to eat and expensive prizes or steak and non-monetary prizes? Most likely, winners would be happy if they could leave work one hour early on a Friday, wear jeans for a week, or park their car in the best spot.

Arrive Early:

Get to the party before other guests to put up decorations, put prizes on a display table and complete any other task that must be done. Decide, when you are planning the party, if you need a few people from the planning committee to help you.

Be Proactive: Make sure the party area will be available when you plan to arrive. If you need 2 hours to set up decorations, you don’t want to find out the hard way that you don’t have access to the area until an hour before the party.

Remember:

You’ll need to decide, possibly with your employer’s input, if it would be best to refer to the company’s party as a “holiday party” instead of a “Christmas party.”

If you are planning your corporate christmas party, contact our office now for a no-obligation corporate entertainment consultation. We can help you plan a party to remember!
